In this moving video (04:09), people take turns reading a letter from Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson in which he explains the importance of lighting Hannukah candles in public spaces as a symbol of the triumph of light over darkness, a message that is relevant in every generation. Referring to the lighting of giant menorahs in city squares, parks and malls, the letter, written in 1980, explains how the mitzvah begins in the home, but must illuminate the entire world. With a focus on outreach, the Chabad movement today is committed to continuing the Rebbe’s legacy to love all Jews and believe in the power of the individual to bring humanity closer to the Messianic era.
