Tel Aviv, la primera ciudad hebrea y centro económico, tecnológico y cultural de Israel, nació de las antiguas raíces de la ciudad adyacente de Jaffa. Los históricos callejones estrechos de la bíblica ciudad portuaria se sobrepoblaron a finales del siglo XIX, lo que llevó al desarrollo de Tel Aviv tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día. Ambas ciudades se han transformado de forma radical a lo largo de la historia, ya que las dunas de arena de Tel Aviv prosperaron hasta transformarse en una animada metrópolis mundial y la antigua ciudad de Jaffa se convirtió en un crisol cultural muy diverso con una composición demográfica única.
